Lady Bugs!!

I really need to catch up on this blog! Unfortunately, i have all the pictures of the cute mini candy corn cuupcakes and the zombie cake on my desktop computer, and my monitor died recently so i cant get to them right now....

SO i'll just start from the most recent cake i did!

It started from a Facebook message from an old friend of mine. Her baby girl turned one this past weekend and she said that she wished i lived closer so i could make her cake! I told her i was sure we could figure out how to get it to her! Then she told me what she wanted and i just HAD to make the cake! You see, i am the mom of two little boys, meaning, i dont often get the chance to make fun girly things. So i JUMPED at the chance to make her cake when she said she wanted lady bugs!

This cake was a blast to make! Even though my oh-so-helpful three year old decided to take giant handfuls out of one of the cakes and i had to bake new cakes at the last minute, it turned out great!

Happy Birthday Taycee!!

Princess Castle cake!

I was terrified of this cake. I told the girl i would do it, then started thinking about it and went "HOW do i even BEGIN?". But i did it anyways, and it turned out pretty cute i think!

My first wedding cake!!

I did this for a good friend of mine. I was a little hesitant about her colors when she told me what she wanted, but it turned out REALLY cute! There were a few learning lessons with this one. They didn't serve cake at the reception, so they only wanted the top tier of the cake to be actual cake so they could cut it. We decided the bottom would be a cake dummy and the middle was rice krispy treats. Both were new to me as far as covering in fondant! Both were relatively easy though. I was pleasantly surprised! I DID have some issues with the fondant though. I figured out that i do not like to make it ahead of time and then tint it later. I had WAY too many air bubbles in it and it got too stretchy and tore really easy. So i'll stick to making it as i go from now on!
Here are the three tiers before they were put together and decorated.

Here are the bottom two layers, covered and doweled!

The cake table! I was a little worried about the topper squashing through the cake, because it was kind of heavy. It started leaning a bit, but it made it to the cake cutting ok!

I was informed by the brides mother (a good family friend, she's our babysitter!) that it is bad luck to put horseshoes that way. Apparently your luck falls out! So i turned them the "right" way before guests showed up. I wont make that mistake again!

Hannah Montana....disaster....

So i started making this simple cake. Just a 10"x10" cake with a Hannah Montana theme. Thought i could just whip it out, no problem. Well that was my FIRST mistake. I had baked the cake the day before in two 10" layers. When i got them out, BOTH of them cracked right down the middle! I thought, no big deal, i'll stick it together with some buttercream and we'll be good to go! (It was for a friends kid, and i knew she wouldn't care). Well....then i realized that AFTER i stuck it together and put the crumb coat on it that it was still on my cutting board, not the cake board. CRAP. I attempted to move it.....

The fault lines erupted and the whole dang cake split into about 5 pieces. Even worse than it looks in this picture. It was a bad earthquake....So i started over. I baked a whole new cake, this time in one layer instead of two. And i didn't fill it like the first one because i was running out of time. Which was really sad because that strawberry filling was AWESOME!

So after i threw a few cooking utensils across the kitchen and got the new cake going, i started on the fondant. I was kinda scared considering how the rest of the day was going. (In the midst of all this, i had a cranky two year old that couldn't decide if he wanted inside or outside and got bit on the face by a wasp...) But it went FABULOUS! The fondant was very obedient, and all my creative juices were flowing when i cut out the Hannah Montana logo. Even my husband was very impressed with how much it looked like the real one!

So even after disaster, the cake made it through in time (well...i was ALMOST on time) to the party! The birthday girl loved it, and i was glad everyone else thought it was cute too!

'Coon hunting cake!

In case you were worried that i wasn't red neck enough.....here's my latest cake! It's for a little boy's first birthday. All mom asked for is camo, but told me to do whatever i wanted with it. So i started out with just camouflage.....then since the family hunts hounds and the camo looked a bit boring it acquired a dog....then i had to have the dog treeing something so trees popped up all over....but there had to be something IN the tree so it acquired a racoon too! Yes i realize that the dog, trees and racoon aren't exactly proportionate, but you get the point!!

This was my first time modeling with fondant, so my little figurines aren't perfect, but i'll get better! And i think the humidity was higher than usual here today, because my fondant was acting really strange....so the cake is in the fridge at the moment (i know, big no-no with fondant) And MAN the camera sure does show flaws! At least i can go back and fix them before i take it to them tomorrow!

Bridal shower treats!

I did all the finger food desserts at my friends bridal shower last night. The cookies from the last post were part of it, and i spent all day yesterday making the rest of the stuff! Literally all day too! I was frosting cupcakes right before i ran out the door to be there on time! LOL!

I did learn that i need to get a lot more serving plates and towers and such if i'm going to be doing events like this though, that's for sure!

I didn't get the greatest pictures of the whole spread because i actually attended the shower as a guest too, i wasn't just there to set up the food. But here's a few before i left the house!

The lineup was:

White chocolate covered marshmallows with sprinkles in her wedding colors
My amazing chewy brownies, bite size of course!
Little bitty mini cheesecakes with cherry and blueberry topping (almost too cute to eat!)
And Key West Cupcakes that are AMAZING! They are filled like Twinkies with lime filling! Thanks to Jen for the recipe!
And the cookies of course!!

Everyone loved the food, so hopefully they liked it enough to order some from me!

Cookies!!!

My friends bridal shower is Friday, so i figured i'd practice with sugar cookies and royal icing for the first time and bring some cute cookies. Well....i didn't know what i was getting myself into! As cute as these things are, they take FOREVER to make! Like seven hours! I guess it might have had something to do with the fact that i did 60 of them though....I learned a lot about royal icing though. Like, dont try to pipe it if it is the consistency of paste glue! It hurts your hand. And wait for the bubbles to all come to the surface after you thin it to flow in the colors, otherwise you get weird holes in your icing when they dry! Even though there were some lessons learned, i think they turned out pretty cute! Her colors really were fun to play with, and i was definitely digging the "cowboy" theme! My favorites? The dress and tux hearts!!! Also, stay tuned for her wedding cake! I'm doing that for her on the 28th, and it will be all the same colors!!

"The Brittany"

My friend Brittany asked me to make a cake for her birthday. All the details she asked for was "Pink, black, stripes, polka dots, funky, weird, and Brittany Bright". So this is what i did! I hope i got it all in there!

I did discover that i love love love polka dots. They are just too fun! I couldn't quit putting them on! I even put them on the cupcakes!

Besides the fact that the cake is fun LOOKING, it also tastes great! (Yes i tasted them all. You really think there were only 6 cupcakes total? I think not!) I tried a whole bunch of new recipes with this one, and they are ALL great! The bottom layer is devils food cake with chocolate chips and cream cheese filling. Can you say RICH!? The top layer and the cupcakes are white chocolate cake with white chips, and a white chocolate cream cheese filling. I cannot describe to you how i love this new filling. There are just no words!!! And i dont even LIKE white chocolate! Needless to say, these new recipes will DEFINITELY make my favorites list!

PS....these pics made me see all the little flaws. Don't worry Britt, i will fix them before i bring it up there to ya!

I'm starting on some frosted sugar cookies today for a bridal shower on Friday. Both the cookie and royal icing recipe are new to me, so it should be interesting! I really hope there's not too much of a learning curve! LOL! I may try my friend Jennifer's recipe for Key Lime Cupcakes too today, but we'll see! Stay tuned for pictures!!
